February is the second and shortest month of the year in our modern day Gregorian calendar and consists of 28 days.
February is named after Latin word februum which means purification. February is the shortest month with only 28 days in common years and in leap years it has 29 days.
Historical names for February include the Old English terms Solmonath (mud month) and Kale-monath (named for cabbage) as well as Charlemagne's designation Hornung.
